Abstract

Allah SWT’s command to His servants to lower their gaze and to cover their 'awrah is an obligation that must be observed by every individual, both male and female believers. A particular emphasis in this command is given to women, as many of them still do not fully understand the essence of 'awrah, mahram, and adornment (tabarruj). This obligation is clearly stated by Allah SWT in His words in Surah An-Nur verse 31. 'Awrah refers to the parts of the body that must be protected from the gaze of others. It is categorized into two types: for men and for women. The 'awrah for men is the part of the body between the navel and the knees. As for women, the 'awrah includes the entire body except the face and the palms of the hands. Surah An-Nur verse 31 is a strong emphasis from Allah SWT directed specifically to believing women, commanding them to cover their 'awrah completely and to guard it from the view of non-mahram men. This specific instruction from Allah SWT shows how noble and honored believing women are, such that their entire bodies must be fully covered to preserve their dignity and honor.
